First Impressions Of Your Home
“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” – Will Rogers.
You’ve been imagining your dream home for years. Each time you see a new idea that you like, you add it to the mix, altering and changing the plan as needed. If you are like me, you most often imagine how things will be laid out, how BIG the closets will be and how you would like your kitchen layout arranged.
When it comes to planning, the outside finish of your home can seem like something you’d like to keep simple and inexpensive. However, have you considered that it will be the first thing that visitors see, but ALSO the first thing that YOU see every time you come home? A beautifully balanced and finished exterior will set the tone and is worth the time and investment.
When building in cities and towns, the dimensions of the lot pretty much decide the layout of your home. Think about suburban “Anytown” and there is a lineup of homes where the garage is the main feature of the home, and there are few if any verandas, or roofed porches. Why? Well, there isn’t room beside the home to tuck the garage out of sight, and porches eat up too much space in the lot’s set-back requirements. These are two options that become available when building on a wide acreage:
Country Options: Side Entry Garage and a Veranda
There are a huge number of exterior finishes to select from, the trick being to figure out the right proportion of each and what colour to pick. Numerous websites have great illustrations of the exterior options and ideas on how to use them best. This is definitely an area of expertise where a home designer can provide guidance. I believe a mistake that some home owners make is:
“if a small amount of a feature finish, like architectural stone, is a good thing, then more is better” Unfortunately, this can backfire, as an expensive trim or stone can overwhelm the design and appear gaudy, rather than classy and beautiful. Of course, this impression may differ from person to person, but it is worth considering others’ opinions before taking an expensive plunge that may not pay off.
For more information about exterior finishing options, contact a local building supply company – many can be found on the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce site. Or, spend some time on websites, like pinterest, for a wealth of ideas.
