Winter Wonderland in Humboldt
If you’re not from the prairies, you may not know the bonus that comes with a fresh snowfall. All of nature gets dusted with a crisp, white layer, highlighting pristine beauty. When the sun comes out again after a blizzard, the sparkling white everywhere is usually blindingly gorgeous.
As much as we value the pretty views, it’s the activities that really make our winters fun. Our locale, near Humboldt, Saskatchewan, gives us unique access to family winter time recreation opportunities.
Snowmobiling – Many people in the area love to take their “sleds” out for a ride and do so every chance they get. There are a number of routes that are signed, labelled and maintained, plus plenty of groups heading out to join up with. A well used central resource for trail maps and information is the Sask Snowmobiling website.
Skating – There are great places to go for a skate here: from the outdoor rink by St. Dominic School in Humboldt, to the pond at Prairie View Properties, to the Elgar Peterson Arena. Whether you join one of the hockey leagues, take skating lessons, or just want to go out for some fresh air and exercise, you’ll be among good company – people here love to skate!
Running – The Humboldt Running Club runs together every Monday and Saturday, year round. While running may not be an obvious winter activity, I can testify that it is a beautiful way to tour our community and you can’t overheat in the cooler temperatures!
Cross-Country Skiing – The local cross-country skiing community is an active one, spear headed by the Carlton Trail Ski Club. There are regularly groomed trails: in Humboldt, on beautifully treed back 9 of the golf course and at the Dixon site, located west of Humboldt.
Curling – The Humboldt Curling Club does a great job of organizing leagues for seasoned and new curlers, plus offers learn-to-curl options for young and old alike. The curling rink is part of the Uniplex, Humboldt’s multi purpose facility, that is also home to the Humboldt Collegiate, Elgar Peterson Arena, Jubilee Hall and Aquatic Centre.
These winter activities are just the start…have you tried snowshoeing? How about a bonfire and wiener roast out in the snow at the Prairie View Properties greenspace? This place we call home offers snowy fun for the whole family – consider this your invitation to come and find out for yourself!
